Week 3 of The Final Blog Project: Italy!

By: Phoenix Krzykowski

Welcome back, my fellow travelers! Last week we took a look at all that India had to offer in my blog post, Week 2 of the Final Blog Project: India, and this we are heading west to Italy! Like my previous blog posts, I have chosen an urban, rural, and beach city, so let’s jump right in!

Verona

The urban city for this week is Verona. This safe city is full of amazing things to see, do, and eat, but that is not all it is known for (Says). Verona is known as the most romantic city in Italy because this is the setting for Shakespeare’s famous play, Romeo and Juliet.

Where to stay

It is no shock that housing in this beautiful country is pricy. However, I found some solutions (DISCLAIMER: the following prices and information will rely on your personal budget). The average for a hotel room in Verona is around $100 a night (Google), and an Airbnb is around $75 a night ([the third] Airbnb). On the other hand, hostels found on Hostello.com are about $33 a night, and all of the ones I looked at had glowing reviews (Team).

What to eat

When researching Veronese food, there was never just ONE thing that everyone said, “You just have to try…” But, when I came across Veronaintour.com, they gave me a list of 10 dishes to try and explained what they were (Tour).

  • Risotto with Tastasal
  • Potato Gnocchi
  • Polenta
  • Risotto all’Amarone
  • Sfogliatelle di Villafranca
  • Pastissada de Caval
  • Lesso Con la Pearà
  • Pandoro
  • Fritole
  • Pasta Fresca

Here is a link to Veronaintour.com if you are interested in what they say about these dishes! And if you forget this list, just walk into a ristorante, point to a random menu item, and you will be just fine!

What to do

Verona is home to the Roman Amphitheater, where they host many concerts! While you are there, you will be right in the midst of ancient Roman architecture! If that is not your scene, you can check out the 13th-century house with the Juliet balcony that is said to inspire Shakespear to write Romeo and Juliet.

Brisighella, Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Brisighella is a tucked-away medieval town, so it is typically missed by many travelers. However, it is safe for travelers to explore (with the appropriate precautions) ([the first] Tripadvisor). Brisighella usually becomes their favorite city in all of Italy. Because Brisighella does not have many tourist attractions, it is the best place to truly embrace the local Italian culture.

Where to stay

Lodging in Brisighella is more affordable than Verona (but again, depending on your budget, you might disagree). Hostels are once again the cheapest option, but the only place you can find them is in neighboring cities (Hostelworld). The average price of a hotel is about $80 a night ([the second] Tripadvisor). Considering all the amenities that hotels come with and being in ITALY, this is a great deal. Buttttt, if I were you, I would rent an Airbnb ([the second] Airbnb). I found an Airbnb for $62 a night (this includes extra fees), it comes with everything you might need, and the host has excellent reviews!

What to eat

Brisighella is known to be home to many foodies, and it is said that they make the best olive oil in Italy. When researching what foods Brisighella is known for, three things came up: olive oil, local wine, and Moretto artichokes (Tina’s).

What to do

Like I said before, there are not a lot of tourist attractions, but wherever you go, you are guaranteed to have a blast just by soaking up the scenery around you. Three monuments mark the edge of Brisighella, and all were made in different periods: La Rocca (14th-century castle), La Torre (19th-century clocktower), and Il Montecino (18th-century religious sanctuary). So, if you are a history fanatic, go check these places out!

Camogli Beach, Liguria, Italy

Camogli translates to “house of wives” and for a good reason. It was named this for the women who ran this town while their husbands went out to fish. Camogli is an Italian secret because most tourists do not know that it exists that is not to say it is not safe for them, though (nancym100). This beach is about an hour away from one of the most famous fashion capitals of the world, Milan. It is the perfect oasis for relaxing after tons of shopping.

Where to stay

As I said before, this beach is only an hour away from Milan, so lodging will be the most expensive here out of the three cities. The best place to stay would be an Airbnb (Airbnb, Camogli), where a night would cost you around $72 (this includes other fees). There are no hostels directly in Camogli (like Brisighella) (Hostel, Camogli), and the average price for a hotel is around $100 a night ([the third] Tripadvisor).

Check it out here!

What to eat

Being on the beach, it is no surprise that the best food to eat here is seafood. Camogli is also known for its focaccia-a type of oven-baked Italian bread.

Photo Credit: girlsgottadrink.com ; Camogli seafood

What to do

If you time it just right, you might be able to attend Camogli’s annual fish fry (Author). On the 2nd Sunday in May, Camogli hosts a massive fish fry for the whole city, and later, everyone goes down to the beach for a bonfire!

Well, it’s been fun you guys! I will see you next week in… Egypt!
